Bulldog 2007 Article 110

(7-18-07)

“I’m from Burlingame. Does it matter?(guy volunteers to sign my ‘h. for mayor’ petition)

I thought it was funny too. I was at breakfast with Jens and Tony De Renzo at the New Village Diner on Polk just south of California when the guy offered to sign my Nominating Petition. Let me toss in another plug here (New Village has best breakfast in town and they’re cheap):

The Tony D Show“A Medical Marijuana Talk Show

(tonydshow@comcast.net)

It will be on Access San Francisco’s Channel #29 and it is supposed to be streamed on the internet for those of you (like me) who don’t have cable. Tony’s sidekick on the show will be long-time medicinal pot advocate, Wayne Justman.

We kicked around the political topics of the day at 7am as Polk Street awakened outside the plate glass windows. There was a consensus that Ed Jew was being persecuted because whatever he did, others had done worse.

Someone brought up the case of Julie Lee who laundered a hundred grand of government money granted through the intervention of Kevin Shelley, then put the money into his campaign. Still, it was correctly noted, Newsom accepted free rent from her for one of his Sunset campaign headquarters and refused to remove her from the Housing Authority Board.

It was a talkative crowd this morning. Proprietors, Anna and David Tam open at 7am officially, but the hardcore fans know they can get in 5 or 10 minutes early. Everyone knows each other. Anna waters the huge plants across the counters while David double checks inventory (they do a kick-ass lunch that packs em in) … he takes a moment to share photos of his grandson and we chat about grandfatherhood and the thugs who sometimes block the sidewalk in front of his business. He and Anna do a trip back to China for one week a year and the breakfast crowd is in withdrawal by day 2. The place is a gem and I’m not gonna tell you anymore.

Scoop of the Century(Move to Privatize Pacific Ocean)

There are 5 trenches in San Francisco Bay that can produce significant amounts of energy through pollution-free tidal power grids. Exactly who owns these trenches is in the balance right now. But, let me give you a heads-up, if you don’t act now, they will be controlled (much as PG&E has stolen Hethc-Hetchy power) by either PG&E, or an even larger neocon.

Ever seen a cheap looking $2,000 suit? Some people’s inner-ugly can just overcome even the most costly tailoring in the world. There were dozens of examples at this past Monday’s meeting of Sophie Maxwell’s Land Use and Economic Development Committee (9/16). They come out of the woodwork when there are billions of dollars at stake. And, at this stage, it’s all about permits. Who hands em out. Who gets em. How long they’re good for. That kind of thing.

“What’s a guy like you doing in a place like this?

The natural trenches in the bay have sufficient force flowing through them daily to power the needs of the entire Bay Area from the City to San Jose. The City has never needed more than 900 megawatts of power daily. The Bay Area uses something like 9,000 Megawatts daily. The trenches can provide 10,000 megawatts.

Watch the hearing and watch the slick snake-oil salesman representing the power combine. He couldn’t even remember the names of all the shell companies involved in the project, but he had the bottom-line down pat:

“We’ll build it (cable) up to your piers.
Then, we give you the plant to maintain.
We retain unlimited transmission rights.

That’s PG&E without maintenance. A dream deal for power moguls. Hell, this time they don’t even have to pay off a bunch of Arab royalty and ship raw product halfway around the world. They do their rip-off of public resources right here in San Francisco Bay! Of course, they want you to toss in a few billion and saddle you with responsibility for the maintenance of the plants that will pump gold to them for filling out a few permit approvals to FERC.

“deferring further approvals to permit consideration
of alternatives to the project

That’s exclusive rights. Just like the kind that Newsom gave his buddy and campaign finance chair, Darius Anderson on Treasure Island. Who do these people think they are? Getty? Shorenstein? Fisher? The City of San Francisco would be insane to approve this. It’s offering exclusive rights to virgin diamond mines! It is akin to the deal that handed PG&E exclusive distribution rights to Hetch-Hetchy power decades back and cost the City billions in revenue.

This is far worse. Imagine if the City maintained its rights to the trenches and was able (it is doable, that’s why PG&E is interested) … if they City provided power for the entire Bay area for starters and then used their technological expertise gained in constructing this system … no one would have to pay taxes anymore.

Why this is a ‘scoop’

Because PG&E and their cohorts didn’t say the words ‘tidal energy’ once in their presentation. They just bury the phrase: “development of renewables into the wording and they have those rights too. What they proposed (get this) is building huge windmills in British Columbia and bringing power from them down the continental shelf all the way down to San Francisco, where they pass under the Golden Gate Bridge (that’s a valuable permit) and branch out to all of the various distribution points they’ll need to hook into the PG&E system.

Uh, yeah, right. Uh huh, windmills in Canada fueling pool rooms in San Jose by way of underwater cables passing through San Francisco Bay? Trust me, the source of their anticipated power is lots closer than British Columbia.

Maxwell was completely clueless

Which is why PG&E chose her to sponsor the legislation. She kept looking at this roomful of high-priced lawyers and wondering why they wanted to spend 2 billion dollars to take a chance on bringing wind power from Canada.

Only a single public speaker mentioned tidal power and asked why they hadn’t mentioned it. He was met with a deafening wall of silence.

This is all about tidal power and who owns the transmission rights of this revolutionary new energy source. OK, it’s been used for a couple of thousand years that we know of. My point is that Canadian wind power is a ruse being employed to seize control of the eternal gold mines that are the 5 SF Bay trenches. And, I’m the only one who figured it out. That makes it a scoop.
