Watching City Hall #357, (3-28-05)
“You can trust me.I am a man of integrity. I believe in federal law. I will continue to arrest pot farmers.”
(Captain Adolf Hettrich, head of narcotics, SFPD)
“They’re liars!They’re all liars!!”
(Lt. Marty Halloran responds to pot patients’ complaints)
OK, the good Captain’s name isn’t ‘Adolf’. I really don’t know what the gentleman’s name is. I simply know that he has no business running the Cop Shop’s narcotics division. I was late to the meeting, as usual. But, (unusual) I was sober and straight.
That was only because I overindulged in the afternoon, passed out and woke up an hour late for the 6pm ‘Meet your local narc’ (or whatever) community meeting Jim Meko set up for his SOMA neighbors. “You missed the whole thing!” commented the affable Sentinel columnist when I came in wiping sleep out of my eyes.“Captain O’Leary already left.” I didn’t give a shit about O’Leary, I was hoping to get a glimpse of the his second-in-command who’d become the bane of medicinal pot.I looked across the room and there he was.
There stood Halloran not 20 feet away. Around 6’4” tall with a gun and a badge and surrounded by cops in and out of uniform with guns and badges.… And, no respect whatsoever for San Francisco law. I patted Jim on the shoulder and went for Halloran like a dog after cat shit.
Marty Halloran’s picture is up in many SF pot clubs. “He tore my card up!” … “He threatened to turn me over to the feds if I didn’t plead guilty!” … “He goes to grower’s seminars and then busts the growers!” Those are some of the nicer things local medicinal pot patients have said about Halloran. I asked if it was all true. He got loud. He got defensive. I don’t think we’re gonna be that good a friends. He called everyone liars. An older narc came over to back him up. A couple of uniformed cops flanked them. I thought of lighting up a joint.
But, of course I didn’t. I’m still healing from the last time I had a run in with the local goons.… The older guy turned out to be top narc, ‘Tim’ Hettrich and he gave me an earful about what he thought about ‘legal’ San Francisco pot.
Point is
The head of narcotics and his first lieutenant do not agree with the City’s pot policy. Not only do they not believe in it, they have announced that they intend to continue to ignore it and enforce federal law. They are going to public meetings announcing exactly this.
Now, that would get you fired most places but most places don’t have a Police Officers Association that actually runs the department. Here, the chief is only a figurehead. If she weren’t she’d call these two clowns in tomorrow before D5 supe Ross Mirkarimi’s 5pm hearing before the entire Board of Supervisors on the pot issue. She should ask them if what I am reporting is accurate. If they tell the truth, they should be relieved of their present assignments and reassigned. If they can’t support San Francisco laws, they shouldn’t be San Francisco cops.
Kudos to Murphy
I think that Patrick Murphy’s ongoing coverage of RBA powerhouse Joe Cassidy’s massive rip-off of the City in his ‘foot of Hunters Point’ development, rates as the very best online work of the year. Maybe offline too. His photos capture the view from Cassidy’s property right on up the hill to the public housing project, soon to be privatized under the latest Newsom proposal. Who wouldn’t want to own an acre or so of waterfront land at the base of that hill for an appraisal of 700 grand? What a great piece of journalism. Why, you’d think that the major news outlets would be snapping the story up. You know, crediting Murphy for his piece de resistance. … But, oh no.
No, Cassidy will get by with his scam. Mabel Teng will dodge another bullet. They’re Democrats. Plus, Murphy broke the story and Bronstein would never credit a web publication. With all the Chron’s manpower and months of work, they completely missed Assessor Teng’s most egregious sins. They’ll ignore it but the rest of us noticed, Murphy. Great work.
Pot hearing today (Tuesday the 29th) at 5pm in the Board chambers. Bring your cameras. The cops love that.
