Watching City Hall #270, (4-19-04)

“When somebody loves you;
it’s no good unless
they love you … all the way.”
(Sinatra?)

It’s time we went out and got a Nobel Prize for San Francisco. Together, we can do it. … I’m not kidding here.

My candidates are Mayor Newsom and the two 80+ year-old ladies with the 50 year relationship who were the initial couple married under Gavin’s decree.

Think about it …

Nobels are given to further causes. Christ, Henry Kissinger got one from a Nobel committee who hoped it would convince him to stop blowing up Southeast Asians. … It’s been given to save the life of a martyr. … People like Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela come to mind. … It’s been given to imprisoned poets and activists under house arrest. … It’s been given to people for saving every kind of ethnic or religious group.

This Nobel, to these 3 people, should be in recognition of an oppressed world minority totally 5-10% of the population of the planet who have had unspeakable horrors visited upon them for all of human history and who have responded by creating the finest art and literature and philanthropy of every generation. … This is a Nobel dedicated to the struggles of the Gay people of the planet Earth. … And, to those who support them.

I’m not kidding here. Nobels go to the highest of ideals and performance. They go for peaceful co-existence and tolerance. Now, I’m not saying Newsom is Mandela. Hell, he’s not even a shadow of Tom Ammiano. … However, Gavin is a great symbol and an example to young, forward looking humans everywhere on this issue. I disagree with the boy on most things, but on this issue he is dead right. … He and the two ladies (sorry, I have no files to go to for your names) … Gavin and the ladies together represent not only the future of freedom for a historically oppressed minority, but to nominate them serves to honor, apologize to and offer legitimacy to every Gay person who ever lived.

Matt Gonzalez and Tom Ammiano should be the one’s nominating Gavin and the ladies. Until 5 weeks ago … this was their idea. … Congratulations to Gavin and his people. I’ll go back to bashing you next column so’s you know it’s still me out here.
